What is the Bayshore Beautiful Neighborhood?

The Bayshore Beautiful Neighborhood is an initiative to protect and promote the easternmost neighborhoods of Tampa. This initiative is led by the Bayshore Business Association and supported by the City of Tampa and its government entities. The BBA hopes to generate interest and awareness about the Bayshore area and its history, and to encourage people to explore this part of Tampa and experience the area’s historic and cultural assets.  Unlike a neighborhood historical district, the BBA does not establish design guidelines for new development or historic landmark designation, but hopes to generate interest, support, and funding for preservation initiatives. The BBA also hopes to generate awareness and support for values-based development and revitalization in the Bayshore community.

The History of the Bayshore Beautiful Neighborhood

The easternmost neighborhoods of Tampa are home to the city’s proudest heritage and its most exciting future. The city’s first major port, Tampa’s Bayshore was the home of generations of families who raised their children here and made their lives. The area’s deep Rust Belt roots run both sides of the racial divide, with long histories of manufacturing and commerce. The Bayshore Beautiful Neighborhood is a place where new and old meet, and where people from all walks of life can live, work, and play.  Since the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915, the Bayshore waterfront neighborhoods have experienced many waves of development and abandonment. From the 1920s to the 1960s, these neighborhoods were filled with large homes and apartments for Tampa’s elite. From the 1970s to the 1990s, the area fell into decline, as the port and the local economy declined. Between the 1990s and today, the Bayshore has seen a resurgence of investment and development.
