Why is Old West Tampa Important to the History of Tampa?

Ybor City’s Most Famous Resident

Luis Muñoz Marín was a prominent Cuban businessman in Tampa who helped establish the city’s cigar industry in the late 1800s. He was also the mayor of Tampa from 1906 to 1912. Muñoz Marín was known for his philanthropy and in 1932, he helped to design the city’s Maritime Park. The park is named for Muñoz Marín and it is the location of the Maritime Museum of Tampa.

The Cigar Factory Ruins are located on the grounds of the Tampa Bay History Center. The cigar factory was built in 1891 for the Tampa Tobacconist Company, which was owned by Henry W. Cluse, Jr. The factory produced cigars for brands like Romeo and Juliet, Flora, and Key Wessel. It closed operations in 1914, and was razed in 1930. All that remains are some foundation stones and some concrete ceiling tiles.
