US Hwy. 98 is a four-lane divided highway throughout its length, with intersections controlled by traffic signals at most locations in the city. In downtown, the road widens to six lanes, but it is not divided. US Hwy. 98 begins as a two-lane rural road in northern Alabama, just west of the Bibb County line. The route runs through Bibb County to the Bibb County line, where it becomes a four-lane rural highway running north through the Wiregrass. In Alabama, US 98 merges with AL 181 to cross AL 251, and the two routes continue north through the Wiregrass, entering Lowndes County.
